Government kick-starts compensation to 600 families

The government has kick-started compensation to 600 families who are affected by the planned construction of Karimenu II Dam in Kiambu County.

Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa says the project will be crucial in providing clean water to more than 850,000 residents in Kiambu and Nairobi counties.

The compensation covers land, crops, structures and disturbance occasioned by the project.

Eight months after the contract was signed paving way for the construction of Karimenu II Dam, the Ksh 24 billion shillings project is now set to commence with relocation of affected persons now underway.

Located in Gatundu North in Kiambu County, the project is meant to increase clean water supply to the capital and towns of Ruiru and Juja.

It has a capa city of 26.5 Million cubic meters of storage volume, producing 70,000 cubic meters daily.

Compensation of affected persons has now commenced where 400 million shillings has been disbursed in phase 1 that targets 118 farmers whose crops will be affected as a result.

The project is financed by the Government of Kenya and the China Exim Bank and executed through a joint venture between AVIC International Holding Corporation and Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute.

Athi Water is also set to embark on the construction of the Ksh 37.2 billion Maragua IV Dam, Ksh 17.4 billion Gatei Dam to benefit 1.3 million persons.

Phase one of the East Nairobi Sewage project at a cost of Ksh 28.9 billion targeting 300,000 people in Nairobi and adjacent towns is also set to commence. The 36 months Karimenu II Dam will be completed in 2020.
