NEMA issues closure notices to Nairobi night clubs

National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued closure notices to four night clubs operating along Ngong road and Kilimani area in Nairobi over noise pollution.

During an operation carried out by NEMA officials accompanied by security officers, Nairobi county executive in charge of environment Emma Muthoni said the move follows complaints by residents of loud music warning that if the clubs fail to adhere by the regulations they will face legal consequences.

The operation which begun at B-club in Kilimani area caught many patrons unawares as a team of NEMA officials moved in to issue notices of closure over noise pollution caused by loud music.

The team accompanied by security officers then proceeded to Kiza club in the same building where a similar notice was issued.

Space club along Ngong road was not spared either with the officials encountering some resistance from its employees who argued that the club abides by the set regulations dismissing claims of playing loud music.

On the opposite side of the road, the officials also delivered a closure notice to Jiweke Tavern.

Though there were no patrons at the time, an employee defended the club saying they only play music bellow 30 decibels.

Muthoni warned that if the clubs fail to adhere to the set regulations, they will face legal consequences.

She said they will carry out another crackdown on Friday to find out if the clubs management have complied with the notices.

NEMA plans to carry out similar operations in various parts of Nairobi to clamp down on rogue clubs operators.
