Flood waters wreaked havoc in Suswa area, Narok co unty, with the busy Narok-Mai Mahiu highway being blocked for the better part of Saturday evening.
The deluge blocked the road near the standard gauge railway construction site for hours as the rains continued to pound the area.
The floods also swept away six vehicles from the road to the culvert.
Six people who were in the cars were rescued by the public. Passengers travelling between Western Kenya and Nairobi and plying the busy roads were stranded near Suswa trading centre about 50km from Narok town.
Tourists visiting the world-famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve were also stranded as the region was a no-go zone.
There was a traffic snarl up as vehicles from Nairobi stretched as far as Satellite area, while those from Western Kenya reached as far as Suswa trading centre.
Following the incident, motorists were forced to use the Nakuruâ"Kericho route instead of Narok-Mai Mahiu road which is shorter.
"We feared that we might be swep t away and we had to move to safe ground until the waters subside. The rains made a mess," motorist Wesley Koech said.
Koech said he and others rescued victims.
Alfred Oduor, who was stranded, said the heavy rains caused floods started at 2pm and made the road impassable.
"I think these are the worst rains I have experienced in my life. The flood waters swept away boulders and sand deposits were washed in the middle of the road," he said.
Oduor urged road users to be careful while using the area which is prone to flooding.Video Vault Poll of the day Most Popular 1 Uhuru asks team tasked to transform Nairobi to sort out garbage, traffic menace 2 'Uncle Ken' Matiba burnt his voter's card in fight for democracy 3 I donât have beef with Kikuyus, says Sonko 4 Though Iâm Kikuyu I wonât vote to give Ruto 20 years in power 5 Uhuru to leave for 5-day UK tour on Monday 6 Matiba was my role model and mentor - Uhuru 7 Corridors of Power 8 Kenneth Matiba is dead 9 Raverend Reloaded: Blockbuster titled KenyaRee 10 [VIDEO] Motorist behind fire at Vivo shell petrol station arrested Must read Uhuru-Raila unity team takes shape Uhuru unhappy after incognito visit to KNH, demands changes Raila leaves for Winnie Mandela's funeral in South Africa Five IEBC tenders at heart of Chiloba, Chebukati wars Potty wars: Youth seizing public toilets, extorting funds to reopen [VIDEO] How months of drought hurt childrenâs growth and potential forever Latest News Matiba was my role model and mentor - Uhuru 'Uncle Ken' Matiba bu rnt his voter's card in fight for democracy Uhuru asks team tasked to transform Nairobi to sort out garbage, traffic menace Kenneth Matiba is dead Somaliland poet jailed for Somalia reunification poetry Farmers count losses as hyena kills 17 goats in Mwingi Popular in Latest news Raila represents Uhuru at Winnie Mandela's burial Uhuru to give talk at Chatham House on Tuesday Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala arrested for allegedly attacking Ababu Five families stranded after floods submerge Limuru underpass © 2018 The Star, Kenya.
