Wreckage of small plane with 10 on board found in Kenya
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) â" The wreckage of a small plane carrying 10 people was spotted southwest of Kenyaâs Aberdare mountain range nearly two days after it disappeared, an official said Thursday.
The wreckage was found in dense forest about 11,900 feet (3,627 meters) above sea level near a 400-meter cliff, said Transport Ministry Principal Secretary Paul Mwangi Maringa. The location had made it difficult for rescuers to spot the plane due to cloud cover.
Military personnel on foot and emergency services had been deployed to the location, Maringa said.
âIt will be quite a difficult climbâ considering the cliff, Capt. Gilbert Kibe with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority told reporters.
Officials did not yet have information about any survivors, Kibe said. A helicopter managed to get close enough to take photos of the site Thursday morni ng.
The plane had been flying from the western town of Kitale to the capital, Nairobi, when it disappeared Tuesday. On board were two pilots and eight passengers.
Officials said Wednesday the search efforts were focusing on the mountain range in central Kenya where a mobile phone signal from the plane had been located.
Crashes involving light aircraft are often reported in Kenya. Many people on board escape with injuries.
